Bureaucracy and language – Obstacle or Chance?

They are hardly noticeable, the „stumbling blocks“ in Kiel. But most of these (so far) 225 laid stones represent a murdered person. Taken in the sidewalk in front of the houses, in which they lived, remind them of the people, who were murdered by the Nazis or committed suicide.

Urban development of Kiel

The development of the city of Kiel can be dated back to 13th century, and all the way up modern times. Initially, only a few thousand people lived in the city, which at the time was more of a village that was located at a wedge-shaped firth (Kiel Firth) by the Baltic Sea. That’s the reason for the initial name of Kiel, which was “tom Kyle” – at the wedge.

Who from Kiel has not heard of the “Toni-Jensen-Gemeinschaftsschule” (a community school) in Neumühlen-Dietrichsdorf? Or, who hasn’t passed the “Ida-Hinz-Platz” in Gaarden? And how about the “Schwester-Therese-Straße” in Holtenau?

Old Pharmacies

They have become a common thing to see at almost every corner in Kiel: pharmacies. Among those, some have been in business for centuries. Two of the oldest are the Alte Rats-Apotheke in the Holstenstrasse and the Hof Apotheke at the Alter Markt.
